I Could Say I Told You So

"I Could Say I Told You So"
2011

Won't you list the things you want
Then just list the things you have
Multiply the second by the first
And divide the resulting list in half
Then place the list upon the wall
So you can tell me what you see
And if the list isn't very small
Then disappointed's what you'll be
'Cause I could say I told you so
But it's what you never wanna hear
So I will continue letting go
And let you fall away from here
Then when you come crawling back
On your hands and hurting knees
An evil smile is what I'll crack
Because my mind will be at ease
Girl, I feel I'm everything you'd want
Just in a shell you wouldn't touch
And if you really read your list
You'd agree that it's a little much
So I'll just suffer in the space
That I fill so very well
As you seek out your fantasy
Until the other shoe has fell
Then I could say I told you so
But it's what you never wanna hear
So I will continue letting go
And let you fall away from here
Then when you come crawling back
On your hands and hurting knees
An evil smile is what I'll crack
Because my mind will be at ease
But now I see you standing up
Trying to brush the dust away
As you return to play the field
Hoping to fulfill your lust today
Which is all fine and very well
But when your calls are not returned
You'll have another tale to tell
To pair with a lesson never learned
'Cause attention's what you seek
But regret's what you often get
For drinking 'til you can't recall
Searching for one you can't forget
And the headache that you'll feel
When morning penetrates your eyes
Will show that disappointment's real
And dear, it seldom ever lies
And I could say I told you so
But it's what you never wanna hear
So I will continue letting go
And let you fall away from here
Then when you come crawling back
On your hands and hurting knees
An evil smile is what I'll crack
Because my mind will be at ease
Now I hear you say the things
That I've always wished to hear
After I played the fool again
And chose to wipe away the tear
That should've made me smile
But resisting was too great a task
So now you feel me growing cold
And a whispered "why" is what you ask
It's because I had to build the walls
You now find around a heart
And I placed stone on top of stone
Hoping it'd tear your world apart
As you saw my waiting list
When you tried to scale the face
To find all the things I loved in you
Have been violently erased
And now I'll say I told you so
Despite what you wanna hear
And I've already let you go
So you can fall away from here
And darling, don't come crawling back
On your hands and hurting knees
Or the evil smile I'll crack
Will be the kindest thing you'll see...
