The Fool Who Waits

"The Fool Who Waits"
2010

Beyond these tempting gates
Lies the paradise of lore
But it's said the fool who waits
Shall never past the door
So I'm staring at your garden, love
With trees not bearing fruit
While vibrant leaves just hang above
That tree mirrors my pursuit
Like that time I took the wheel
On a search for something real
But all I found
Was cold and unforgiving ground
Yet still I drive today
To try and find a way
To get beyond those gates
Because I'm that fool who waits
And I thought I held the key
Within all I had to give
But thanks to intangibles
Outside's where I had to live
And this downward slide
That friendship's forced to take
Just won't slow down
Or even try to brake
Like that time I took the wheel
On a search for something real
But all I found
Was cold and unforgiving ground
Yet still I drive today
To try and find a way
To get beyond those gates
Because I'm that fool who waits
And as I head downhill
I take a little glance
My eyes begin to fill
In hopes there is a chance
That I'll survive the plunge
Though a part of me will not
So I hold on tight
And give it everything I've got
Like that time I took the wheel
On a search for something real
But all I found
Was cold and unforgiving ground
Yet still I drive today
To try and find a way
To get beyond those gates
Because I'm that fool who waits
Now it seems another has the key
To the paradise of lore
But that fool moves with haste
And gets far beyond the door
And it seems the rib I sacrificed
Was used to pick the lock
And the blank look upon my face
Mirrors the expression on the clock
So as the sands slip through
The center of the glass
I take my solace in the fact
That paradise will never last
But deep inside I think
That it'd be nice to feel
The warm embrace of grace
And the salvation it conceals
But now it's time I took the wheel
And search for something real
Even though all I've found
Was cold and unforgiving ground
Yet still I drive today
To try and find a way
To get beyond those gates
'Cause for far too long,
I've been that fool who waits....
