The Only Option Is War

Hello everyone. I hope you all are doing well. This poem is an older piece, that I wrote a couple of years back, in 2011. I was posting so much of my stuff to this blog, that I didn't get a chance to fully examine all of my entries and give them the proper commentary. So I thought that I'd begin the process of changing that. And first up, is a poem called, "The Only Option Is War." This particular piece was inspired by my perception of some real life events. See, there was this girl that I had liked years ago, that had recently come back into my life. And I was a bit excited by this. But I had heard through the grapevine, that she was in a relationship with someone. And through this grapevine, came all sorts of info, saying how the guy wouldn't always treat her right, and he would argue with her until she cried, etc. etc. So hearing all of this, I was honestly a little perturbed. I was wondering how a guy could look a girl so beautiful and treat her that way. But given my crush that I was harboring, I didn't even consider that there might have been another side to that story. I was only hearing the side that I wanted to hear. So after hearing about their verbal fights, I felt compelled to write. And what I wrote, is what follows. I imagined a metaphoric war between this girl and her man, and this poem is written as if I am telling him that the war that is raging, is completely his fault. And that when all was said and done, that he did not deserve her. And of course, in my biased opinion, I did. But like so many things in my life, nothing really came from this. I was only left with a pretty good poem when it was all said and done, lol. But enough of my rambling, I'll finally let you go read it now. But oh yeah, before I forget, the imagery used in the poem was inspired by a truly, beautiful film, that is one of my true all-time favorites, called, "The Last Samurai." If you have yet to see it, I really suggest that you do. I promise you that you won't regret it. But okay, I'll hush. Go read, lol.

"The Only Option Is War"
2011

From atop this humble hill
I see the sides as they are drawn
Like a line inside the sand
As the moon gives way to dawn
Now flags are trapped inside a breeze
Waiting for soldiers to bring
The much needed munitions
That will help these cannons sing
'Cause when all the talk has died
And they've attacked your pride
Oh, I've said it before
The only option is war
Raise your sword or loaded gun
Then you'll be the quoted one
Instead of getting to see
How painful surrender can be
'Cause the spoils go the victor
And if you would have picked her
I feel that you wouldn't be
The one down on bended knee
And the lessons that you're learning
Will continue their burning
As you slowly realize
You lost your grip upon a prize
'Cause when all the talk has died
And they've attacked your pride
Oh, I've said it before
The only option is war
Raise your sword or loaded gun
Then you'll be the quoted one
Instead of getting to see
How painful surrender can be
I've heard every story friend
I've seen her spill her every tear
And though wits were at their end
She still wished to hold you near
So she was often called a fool
By myself and those who cared
'Cause when it came love
It seems like pain was all you shared
'Cause when all the talk has died
And they've attacked your pride
Oh, I've said it before
The only option is war
Raise your sword or loaded gun
Then you'll be the quoted one
Instead of getting to see
How painful surrender can be
And I'd rather see a queen alone
Than to see her sit beside your throne
For truly heavy is your head
And no truer words were ever said
Because jesters often wear the crown
When there is no one around
Who can put up a greater fight
Well my friend, that changes tonight
'Cause now all the talk has died
And you've been attacking her pride
So, I've said it before
The only option is war
Now I raise my sword and loaded gun
Until I'll be the quoted one
And you'll be getting to see
That she looks much better with me
Here atop this humble hill
We see your side has withdrawn
And now her lovely hand
Fights to hide as she yawns
As your white flag's trapped inside a breeze
And waiting for soldiers to bring
Your pride a much needed doctor
That will help ease the sting...
