The Age Old Bed
"The Age Old Bed"
2011
Piercing laughter fills my ears
An evil smile has told my eyes
That the mirror's often honest
Seldom ever telling lies
So this image that I find
Is a symbol I should know
For that crack inside my mind
Has surely begun to grow
So do you wanna see what's deep inside?
Do you wanna see what hides beneath my pride?
Or would you rather look away?
And save it for a much darker day.
Do you wanna see what I've been holding back?
The beast that I've been keeping in.
Since it's that age old bed you've made,
And are soundly sleeping in.
A piercing scream has filled my ears
A stream of tears has left your eyes
And if I could be honest love
It's a sight that I despise
Because I've tried the whispers
They weren't loud enough for you
So now I'll shake the rafters
Until your crying spell is through
And I'll ask,
So do you wanna see what's deep inside?
Do you wanna see what hides beneath my pride?
Or would you rather look away?
And save it for a much darker day.
Do you wanna see what I've been holding back?
The beast that I've been keeping in.
Since it's that age old bed you've made,
And are soundly sleeping in.
Oh I wonder, are these thoughts productive?
'Cause I sure don't feel that way
And is screaming words destructive?
When you won't hear the things I say
And will the tongue I used to bite
Ever heal the way it should
'Cause I went and said my piece tonight
Just like you said I would
But I see the look you're wearing
And it's one I recognize
It's where you pretend that caring
Will help you win the prize
Of my blind obedience
That you always used to claim
But now it's slipped beyond your grasp
And you have no other soul to blame
So do you wanna see what's deep inside?
Do you wanna see what hides beneath my pride?
Or would you rather look away?
And save it for a much darker day.
Do you wanna see what I've been holding back?
The beast that I've been keeping in.
Since it's that age old bed you've made,
And are soundly sleeping in.
If I could find the words to summarize
The way I'm feeling now
I would watch your state of suffering
And admit I'm feeling proud
To help those little tables turn
And make those tired bridges burn
Since playing too close to fire
Is for what the moth has always yearned
But if your wings ever catch a light
And you become a shining butterfly
I'll just dance inside the ashes
And leave the clean-up to some other dumber guy
And I'll ask,
So do you wanna see what's deep inside?
Do you wanna see what hides beneath my pride?
Or would you rather look away?
And save it for a much darker day.
Do you wanna see what I've been holding back?
The beast that I've been keeping in.
Since it's that age old bed you've made,
And are soundly sleeping in...
