Game Of Love

This poem was a rather simple one; and honestly, it was pretty fun to write. It's title was inspired by a song I really enjoy called, "The Game Of Love" by Carlos Santana and Michelle Branch. But what I decided to do in the poem, was actually use different games as metaphors to describe different scenarios that happen when people try to get involved with each other.

"Game Of Love"
2009

If love was like a game of chess
Would you be a pawn?
Or would the king send out the knights,
Just to have you home by dawn?
Would his rooks give scathing looks
If you ever waved my way
Or would they quote from all the books
And say how we're supposed to play
I hear them say love is just a game
Then the players are to blame
For being so inclined to cheat
That we get acquainted with defeat
If love was like a game of cards,
Would you be the queen of hearts?
Would the jacks send their regards
For piercing through your better parts
With the swords they used to save
To bury in their empty heads
But now it's just the ace of spades
That's in our lover's hand instead
I hear them say love is just a game
Then the players are to blame
For being so inclined to cheat
That we get acquainted with defeat
But the day will surely come
To greet the monsters we've become
'Cause if we keep playing by the rules
Then we'll keep looking like the fools
Who sit still with cards in hand
Moving backwards 'cause they can
Yet they still refuse to fold
Because their ego's taken hold
As one soul is forced to lose
They do their best to hide the bruise
Cause they've proved with foolish pride
That our chivalry has died
I hear them say love is just a game
Then the players are to blame
For being so inclined to cheat
That we get acquainted with defeat
But the day will surely come
To greet the monsters we've become
'Cause if we keep playing by the rules
Then we'll keep looking like the fools
That greet us in the mirror...
