Icarus Of Lore

This was a poem I wrote after a little bit of research. Often times, I'll be on wikipedia reading articles. And I'll do what I've referred to as, "getting lost in links." Where I start clicking links in the article, and get taken to other articles, and so on and so forth. And after reading the story of Icarus, I got inspired to write. Given my feelings on faith, and how I often wonder if God actually exists or not. I came up with my own interpretation of the story of Icarus. In the original version, Daedelus fashioned a set of wings for himself and his son Icarus with feathers and wax. He warned Icarus not to fly too close to the sun, and of course, after ignoring his father's warning, the wax on Icarus's wings melted, and he plummeted to the sea and drowned. And my interpretation of the story was that Icarus believed that with his wings, he could be angel and find his way to God and overcome his doubts. But after "falling from grace," Icarus feels betrayed by God. And instead of blaming himself for his hubris, he lashes out in disappointment, because he feels that his questioning of God has led to his demise.

"Icarus Of Lore"
2010

Once inside a sky so blue
I flew too high and fell to you
Reaching high I burned each wing
While placing blame on everything
And everyone that lies in sight
As if my rage will make it right
And Father warned his foolish youth
But I ignored his words of truth
I had to rise before the fall
To prove I'll never know it all
But I've longed to feel this free
And then you took the world from me
So my fall was fast and swift
The ground destroyed each feathered gift
And as the wax began to run
I felt my faith become undone
So I screamed into the skies
And yet He never once replied
So I'll never know the sweet caress
Of the one who'll put my soul at rest
I had to rise before the fall
To prove I'll never know it all
But I've longed to feel this free
And then you took the world from me
And I rose before I fell
It's a tale you know so well
Yet still I hoped to be
The exception for this misery
Still I rise and rise some more
Just like Icarus of lore
But then I came crashing down
And saw that you were not around
So now I fall and fall again
Hoping you would let me in
But when I'm crashing down this fast
I'm easier to just look past
I had to rise before the fall
To prove I'll never know it all
But I've longed to feel this free
And then you took the world from me
And I rose before I fell
It's a tale you know so well
Yet still I hoped to be
The exception for this misery
Catch me, catch me, if you can
Oh what say you, Son of Man
I feel I lie beyond your grip
Have my heart and soul begin to slip...
