Long For The Land

This is a poem that came together relatively fast, when I wrote it. But after re-reading it today, I feel like it needs a lot of work. So I just may end up revisiting this in the near future.

"Long For The Land"
2010

Extended arms present
This little gift to you
The time and opportunity
For you to sift through
The ashes of the yesterday
Today wants to take
Inside an unforgiving breeze
While hoping you'll make
Make way for the present
By forgetting the past
The future is fleeting
So that means it won't last
Unless you reach out
And take it by the hand
'Cause too many years at sea
Should make you long for the land
And extended arms present
A new home for you
Safe inside of my grasp
When alone just won't do
And the ashes of the yesterday
Slowly disappear
That's when you felt my arms
Start pulling you near
As you make way for the present
By forgetting the past
The future is fleeting
So that means it won't last
Unless you reach out
And take it by the hand
'Cause too many years at sea
Should make you long for the land
With every heightened crest
Comes an even lower trough
And that's when the people you need
Started blowing you off
But you don't have to worry
Since the seas here are calm
As long as your hand will fit
Right inside of my palm
But fear not darling sailor
Your white sails won't tear
For I'll handle them gently
I possess so much care
Now won't you come here and take me
Anywhere that you choose
'Cause I've found that time
Is all that we have to lose
As you make way for the present
By forgetting the past
The future is fleeting
So that means it won't last
Unless you reach out
And take it by the hand
'Cause too many years at sea
Should make you long for the land...
