Wise Beyond Your Years

This a rather short poem, but kind of dark in subject matter. It's written from the perspective of a guy who is admitting to a woman that he has intentionally broken her heart. Despite the things she has heard about him, she took a chance, and since he was hurt before by a woman, he wanted to take it out on someone else. Thankfully, I've never been in this situation. But I was able to put myself in that mindframe of wanting revenge on someone, because I know what it's like to feel wronged by people.

"Wise Beyond Your Years"

2009

You should've listened to the rumors
But you listened to the lies
You should've listened to my fellow wolves
And seen through my disguise
But there was just a tiny hint of wool
That was draped across your eyes
And thanks to scams I've had to pull
I've already won the prize
So while I don my scarlet letter
You must shoulder all the blame
'Cause history has often said a moth
Is only loyal to the flame
And as the flame begins to burn
Possessions turn to ash
And anything you thought you knew
Is gone inside the flash
But alas you're not the first
And you're surely not the last
Because my heart is frozen due
To the heartbreak in my past
So now the tables to start to orbit
This stance I chose to take
And I'm afraid your steel resolve
Is what I'll surely have to break
Since this little dance of ours
Is like that roulette the russians play
And dear I do believe the odds
Will never swing your way
But save your tears darling child
For the land cannot bear a drop
And you seem to be the type
That would start but never know to stop
But to hear your sobs would bring delight
And such comfort to my ears
I'll just hope this lesson that you've learned
Has made you wise beyond your years.
